How Long Does It Take to Receive Dental Implants?
November 2, 2024
When it comes to replacing missing teeth, dental implants are the name of the game – these ingenious restorations are capable of replicating the entire structure of one or several missing teeth, making them stand out from traditional options. If you’re intrigued by dental implants or you’ve already committed to receiving them, though, you may have questions about what to expect during the process, including how long it usually takes. While it does vary case by case, continue reading to get a general idea of what you can anticipate.
Before the Implant Surgery
Before you are able to get dental implants, your dentist will need to determine whether or not you’re a good candidate for the procedure. This is important because implants need to be placed directly into your jawbone, so if your jawbone is too weak or too thin, you’ll need to undergo a supplement bone graft, sinus graft, or similar procedure first, or explore other alternatives.
Keep in mind that dental implant patients must also be in decent oral health and free of gum disease; compromised gum tissue means the implants won’t have the support they need to remain in place. Fortunately, various types of periodontal therapy can often address these gum issues before the implants are placed.
Note that if you require any sort of preliminary procedure before getting dental implants, it will lengthen your overall timeline. Your dentist will be able to give you a more accurate window once they’ve reviewed your case with you and planned out all of your procedures.
Following the Implant Surgery
The entire surgery will normally take between one and two hours for one dental implant. Of course, if you’re planning to get more than one, this will increase the surgery time as well as the associated costs. In any case, when your dentist talks with you about your procedure, they’ll show you where each implant is going and review how many you’ll be getting.
Once the surgery is done, you’ll enter the recovery phase of your dental implant journey. This period usually takes a few months, as your implant posts will need adequate time to fuse with your jaw and your gums will need to heal. You’ll also need to take good care of your mouth during this time – any oral health setbacks will only extend the process!
Of the estimated 120 million Americans who are missing at least one tooth, more and more of them are turning toward dental implants to rebuild their smile and restore their confidence. And given how straightforward and streamlined the process is, it’s easy to see why!
