Weekend in Tennessee with Remote Area Medical

May 18, 2011

Greetings,

I recently returned from a weekend mission in Anderson County Tennessee and wanted to share my experiences with you.

After watching a feature story on 60 Minutes last year about RAM (Remote Area Medical) I immediately decided to join the organization.
RAM is the brainchild of Mr. Stan Brock. You may remember him from Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom on Sunday nights. Armed with a DC-3 airplane, supplies, equipment and a host of volunteers, his goal was to fly into remote areas of the world and provide medical and dental care to the underserved. After successfully doing so Mr. Brock realized that much of this work needed to be done at home. Throughout the year the organization travels to different areas of the U.S. to treat the less fortunate.

On the weekend of April 30th- May1 2011, over 400 volunteers (among them 30-40 dentists) assembled and created a dental and medical clinic at the First Baptist Church in Clinton Tennessee. During those 2 days approximately 900 patients were seen who received such services as cleanings, fillings and extractions. Unfortunately due to the level of dental disease down there most of the work entailed extractions. In less than a 2 day span a total of 1400 extractions were done!

Although the days were long and exhausting, my colleagues and I were happy to serve these fine folks who would otherwise have no access to care. This was truly a life changing experience for me. Going forward I plan to do one to two missions a year.
